Version 1.5 Overview

TeeShot version 1.5 Overview
TeeShot version 1.5 is now available! Here is an overview of some of the new features in version 1.5.

GPS Support
One of key differentiating features of the iPhone 3G is built in GPS support. Being able to see where you are at any given moment is a great feature for a cell phone and being able to integrate that with Google Maps makes for even cooler features.

TeeShot 1.5 uses this same GPS technology to help you track the distances of your shots and to figure out how far you are from the green on any course where the GPS coordinates of the green have been uploaded to TeeShot Live. We have tried to make gathering this information as simple as possible both for geotagging the greens on your favorite course and for geotagging the location of each shot.

What you won't see in version 1.5, though, is graphical views of each hole and the GPS location of all of the landmarks on the course. The iPhone's GPS is currently not accurate enough to be able to make shot by shot decisions based on GPS information. If a future iPhone has a more accurate GPS transceiver, we will look into tagging more locations at that time.

As always, if you have any feedback on what you see here please let us know.

Geotagging a green
version 1.5 TeeShot Home Screen The process of setting the GPS coordinates for the greens on your favorite courses couldn't be easier. Choose your course from the courses list, tap any of the tee sets, then tap the hole number for the green you are tagging. You will see the hole description page that is very similar to the one in version 1.0 but with a couple new options.

Go stand in the middle of the green and tap the "Set GPS Location" button. This will turn on GPS and start determining the exact coordinates of the middle of the green. You will see the accuracy of the current value just below the button.

version 1.5 TeeShot Home Screen When the accuracy gets down to 17 meters (19 yards) or less, then you have the coordinates to about as accurate as the iPhone can provide. When you hit this, just tap "Save Location" and TeeShot will then set the GPS coordinate for this hole across all of the tee sets.

If you don't want to save the updated coordinate, just tap the "Stop updating GPS location" button to turn off the GPS receiver. If you don't tap "Save location", the previous value for the green's location will not be changed.

version 1.5 TeeShot Home Screen Once the coordinate is saved, you can tap the blue chevron button to show the current coordinate in Google Maps. This is a great way of making sure you are where the iPhone thinks you are.

If you find that the coordinates are not quite right, you can always repeat this process. If the hole already has the coordinate set, just tap "Update GPS Location" to start getting the coordinates.

version 1.5 TeeShot Home Screen When you have set the location for all of the greens on the course, just tap the "Upload course to TeeShotLive.com" to update the course at TeeShot Live with the geolocations of each green. Now when the next user downloads this course, they will get the GPS information as well.

Measuring shot distances
version 1.5 TeeShot Home Screen Measuring shot locations is very similar to geotagging a green. In the shot by shot tracking page for whichever shot you are on. Stand near your ball and just tap the "Set GPS location" button. This will turn on GPS and start determining the exact coordinates of your ball. You will see the accuracy of the current value just below the button.

On a tee shot, you should stand near the tee. For every other shot, just stand where your last shot landed.

version 1.5 TeeShot Home Screen When the accuracy gets down to 17 meters (19 yards) or less, then you have the coordinates to about as accurate as the iPhone can provide. When you hit this, just tap "Save Location" and TeeShot will then set the GPS coordinate for this shot and then calculate the distance of the previous shot and update that value.

version 1.5 TeeShot Home Screen Once the coordinate is saved, you will see the distance from the tee, distance from the last shot location and, if you have tagged the green for this course, you will also see your distance to that green. If you can tap the blue chevron button to show the current coordinate in Google Maps. This is a great way of making sure you are where the iPhone thinks you are.

If you find that the coordinates are not quite right, you can always repeat this process. If the shot already has the coordinate set, just tap "Update GPS Location" to start getting the coordinates.

A word about GPS accuracy
A GPS coordinate is only as good as its accuracy. On the iPhone, the best accuracy I have seen throughout testing is about 9 meters (about 10 yards). If you're trying to figure out whether you want to hit a strong gap wedge or weak pitching wedge into a green, having your distance accurate to +/- 10 yards is probably not going to be good enough. There are still a number of places where the iPhone's GPS capabilities are really quite sufficient. If you are within 125 yards of the green (this distance will vary from player to player) you will probably still want to use a laser range finder or some other more accurate mechanism to get your distance to the flag. The combination of the inaccuracy of the original green measurement, the current GPS location measurment and the fact that the pin is probably not in the center of the green on any given day make GPS much less useful for your short game. For that reason, TeeShot does not provide the option to tag the location of any putts after the first one.

One last thing, it can sometimes take 15 seconds or longer for the iPhone to get a value that is sufficiently accurate. When you are playing with other people, just tap the button to start grabbing the shot's location as you're figuring out which club to choose. It should have an accurate value for you before long. Just don't spend too much time looking at the phone, or someone might think you're working on the course!

Multiple Players
One of the most requested features in TeeShot is the ability to keep score for up to four players. Version 1.5 delivers on that request allowing users to add their friends to the list of players, enter their handicap and then add them to rounds and track the entire foursome's score on the new Group Scoring screen.

Here is how multiple player support works in TeeShot 1.5:

version 1.5 TeeShot Home Screen The updated main screen has a new option, Players, that takes you to the page. Observant users will notice that the icon we used in 1.0 for rounds has been repurposed for players and there is a new icon rounds.

version 1.5 Player Config Screen The Players page is where you can add or remove players from TeeShot. Add all of your golfing friends in here and then you can add them to rounds in the future with just a couple of taps. The owner of the iPhone should set their name as the "(me)" player so their scores can be easily distinguished from other players.

version 1.5 Player Details Screen Tap on a player on the Players page, or create a new player and you will see the Player Details page. Here you can set the name of the player by choosing them from your contacts list and you can set their handicap so that TeeShot knows how to calculate their course handicap and figure out their net scores for each hole.

version 1.5 Players on this Round Screen Now when you start a new round, after you've selected the course and tees you'll be playing from, you can add up to three more players to your round. The Players page within a round shows all of the players currently added to this round. The owner of the iPhone, whose name is followed by (me) is always the default first player in the list.

version 1.5 Add Players to a Round Screen To add or remove players from a round, tap the Edit button. Then you can tap "Add a player" to choose a new player from the list of configured players. Tapping the - button next to a player lets you remove them from the round.

version 1.5 Choose Player Tee Screen After choosing the player's name from the Players list, you need to set which tee set they will be playing from. That's right, each player could be playing from a separate tee set and TeeShot will figure out their course handicap specific to the tees they are using for this round. Once you've chosen their tee set, click Start Round in the top right to go back to the list of players for the round where you can add another player, or start scoring the round.

version 1.5 Group Scoring Screen One of the other top requests for TeeShot is a simple way of entering scores that uses the keyboard. The Group Scoring screen lets you see all of the players in the foursome at the same time. Just tap the strokes, putts or penalties score you want to change and the keyboard pops up letting you set the value for that player. The Group Scoring screen then shows the players net score, course handicap and whether this hole was a Green in Regulation for them or not. You also see their total score so far along side their score relative to par for the whole round. If the player gets any strokes on this hole based on their handicap, you will see one dot per stroke next to their name. All in this one handy screen. When you're finished with this hole, just tap the right or left arrow in the top right corner to go to the next or previous hole.

version 1.5 Group Scoring Screen Being able to see and edit all four player's scores at once is a great step forward, but what if you want to review the whole round? TeeShot's scorecard view lets you view all of the scores for all holes on one page broken out into the front 9 and, if you're playing an 18 hole course, the back 9.

Many users have asked for a scorecard view that is more like a traditional scorecard. The first version of this page actually looked like a real scorecard, but while looking familiar, was actually a harder to read and required flipping the phone sideways to see more than just a few holes of data. After some playing around with different options, we went back to the clean lines of the current design which also allows easier expansion for side game results in the future.

version 1.5 Group Scoring Screen Below the back 9 on the scorecard view, you can also review totals for each player including their total and net scores and total putts and penalties.

Multiple Player summary
With TeeShot 1.5's multiple player support we have tried to strike a good balance between the simplicity of the iPhone and ease of keeping score for up to four players with the flexibility of being able to have all of the data you need for a round at your fingertips. This also sets us up to be able to add more fun features in the future like side games, more scoring options and nice little things like who has the honors on the next hole.

In addition to the group scoring page is also possible to use the same hole scoring screen from version 1.0 for any of the players if you prefer to tap +/- keys to track the score and the shot by shot scoring is still available for the owner "(me)" player. Shot by shot scoring is not available for any additional players. While this was certainly technically possible to do, we think that it would be way too much data entry to try to track clubs, distances, shot results, etc for each player.

As always, if you have any feedback on what you see here please let us know.
